Free University of Berlin or Freie Universität Berlin, is a public university which is situated in Berlin, Germany and founded in 1948. This university is popular because of its rankings not only in Germany but also internationally. Like its name “Free University”, this institution provides free education for all undergraduate programs and most graduate and post graduate programs. The main academic topics for this university are Biology, Chemistry, and Medicine.

- What do you need to attend FU for free?
  • You should be at least 18 years old.
  • You should have reached the equivalent of second-semester sophomore status or beyond at 4-year universities and colleges, and be in the process of completing their B.A./B.S. degree
  • You should have a very good command of English. TOEFL score should be a minimum of 100. IELTS overall score must be 6.5 and individual parts’ marks can’t be lower than 6.0.
  • You should be committed to participation in their intensive German language component (all levels offered, no prior knowledge of German required)
  • You should have a GPA of at least 3.

Each campus is for each of the departments of the majors in the university. These days, Campus Dahlem is a hotspot for research and culture for lots of research teams. The student village which was built during the 1960s, has 27 buildings constructed near “Schlachtensee lake” serving as housing opportunities for students in Berlin. As this student village is now filled with residential and community buildings, lots of students can stay there without worrying about the accommodations. In addition, FU has the largest library system in Germany according to Wikipedia. It has the central university library(UB) and 49 specialized libraries of the institutes with an inventory of 8.5 million volumes and over 25,000 journals.

- Fees and Fundings

Free University of Berlin provides free education for both EUs and Non-EUs (international students) except for some graduate or postgraduate programs. Moreover, students also need to pay certain fees and charges each semester and it can be different from student to student. Free University of Berlin participates in the national "Germany Scholarship" program organized by the federal government, universities and numerous private companies and highly talented and committed students can get €300 monthly.The living cost in Berlin may depend on your personal preferences and habits but the average living cost is around 934 Euros. Degree program students with a residence permit for study purposes can work for a maximum of 90 days per year. (Jobs as a student tutor at the university don’t count.) Students receiving grants are not allowed to work. This university does not award any grants or scholarships but they do accept students having grants from other organizations or from the government.
