How to find the right career path?

Choosing a college major is definitely one of the many struggles that students face nowadays. You might be someone who still has a few years left until you have to make this decision or you might be someone who only has a few months left to do so. Nonetheless, this article is to make the process just a little easier for you.

Now that a lot of burmese youths are getting to know more about international education systems, we have come to a realization that we have a variety of options. Even at IGCSE level, we have to choose subjects based on the profession that we are pursuing in the future and it indeed is overwhelming for a lot of us.

Why is it important to choose the right career path?

We have to spend years trying to obtain a college degree along with multiple efforts and sacrifices. However, there are many adults who are working in unrelated fields from the courses they had studied in college. And I believe that nobody invested years of their lives just to end up pursuing different careers. In fact, it is important that you choose the right career path.

There are many factors to consider while choosing a college major :

  • It should be something that you ardently adore. If you are not passionate about it, you are just wasting your time.

  • It should also be worth the money you have to pay for and the time you have to spend. Some degrees are not really worth it if many people are working in that particular field without degrees. That means you can pursue that job without getting a degree, so don’t waste your time at college and start earning experiences practically.

You might get influenced by others' opinions and it’s totally fine.

Students deliberately choose majors that have great job opportunities and make them a good sum of money after graduating in order to have a promising future. What is the point of having a promising future if you are not going to be happy? That eventually leads to stress and job losses in the future.

Most of the time, it is because we are influenced by other people around us. For instance, stereotypical burmese parents tend to pressure us into studying something that can get us paid well without considering our potentials and hobbies. We can understand them wanting the best for their children, but let’s not forget that we also want the best for ourselves.

Choosing a college major is one of the important decisions that students have to make in their lives and whenever we are making big decisions, we should not be influenced by anyone or anything. Before making a decision, you should always ask yourself why you want to do this and why not the other.

Uncover your passion!

Understandably, it is easy to get influenced by others when you don’t know what you want. Only a few people have the instincts of what they want to become. Many are still living with doubts and uncertainties even after having lived half of their lives. Therefore, it is not a problem if you don’t know what you want, but it is a problem if you don’t try.

Here are some tips!

  • Picture yourself doing different kinds of jobs, imagine yourself in different situations and think carefully how you feel about each of them.
  • Don’t be ashamed that you want to take up an uncommon career path.
  • Do not consider how other people would feel about your choice.
  • Try taking online quizzes that can tell you what career might fit you, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to pursue it.

The last tip is that although it is best to make a great decision, do not regret it even after realizing that you had made a wrong choice, because there is so much more to life than a college degree or a job offer.
